چکیده

Antidepressants that block the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA) are called 5-HT and NA reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). SNRIs are agents that show “dual action” on 5-HT and NA. These drugs bind the 5-HT transporters (SERT) and NA transporters (NAT) similar to tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). However, SNRIs differ from TCAs in that SNRIs do not exert much affinity for other receptors. Altough SNRIs are called “dual action” 5-HT NA agents they increase dopamine levels in the prefrontal cortex via NAT inhibition. In this way, they have a third action on neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex.

A meta-analysis of effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on blood pressure in depression treatment: outcomes from placebo and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor controlled trials

Background Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have been commonly prescribed for depression treatment. However, their effects on blood pressure are unclear. Materials and methods Effects on blood pressure of depressive patients in two groups (SSRIs versus placebo and SSRIs versus SNRIs) were evaluated. A search was conduc...

Enhancing central noradrenergic function in depression: is there still a place for a new antidepressant?

Noradrenaline has long played a key role in the way the etiology of depression is conceptualized and in the mechanism of action of many current antidepressants. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRIs), the noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant ...

The physiology of sexual functioning

Depression and sexual dysfunction are both common in the general population. When they co-exist they have the potential to impact negatively on each other in a bidirectional manner. Medication used to treat depression may cause additional problems with the sexual response cycle; although no drug is completely innocent, serotonergic agents such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) ...

Plasma Interleukin 6 Predicts Response to Serotonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors in Major Depressive Disorder

We investigated the association between the plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) level and response to Serotonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients. Patients with MDD diagnosed by DSM-IV-TR (M/F: 45/52, mean age 48 years) were enrolled in the present study. All participants were treated by monotherapy of duloxetine (n=48) or milnacipran (n=49). The end-...

The economic impact of introducing serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors into the Brazilian national drug formulary: cost-effectiveness and budget-impact analyses.

OBJECTIVE To determine the cost effectiveness, from the Brazilian Ministry of Health viewpoint, of three antidepressant classes for major depressive disorder (MDD), and the budget impact of introducing serotonin-noradrenaline (norepinephrine) reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) into the current Brazilian national drug formulary, assuming a 6-month treatment duration. METHODS An existing decision-tree...
